GIGUYWASSA The Giguywassa Intercultural Center for Music, Dance and Movement has been launched in the new university building Mario Luzi in north Florence (Via Doni, intersecting with Via Maragliano). The brand-new building rises as white and magnificent as an ocean liner. Our large, modern space is equipped with parquet dance floors, sound-absorbent walls, and mirrors are on their way. We will now be able to work on long-term projects of greater scope, giving continuity to lessons and seminars and making it an important center for Italy at large. While our primary focus remains on the study of African performing arts, we are opening up to new influences and collaborations, all related to intercultural practices. We offer a diverse roster of courses, ranging from Brazilian capoeira to Tai Chi, from Argentine tango to hip hop. We have a special affinity with folk traditions, body movement techniques, street arts and practices that promote health and wellness. We would love your help and support especially to build a music archive, which will be a documentation center on anthropological and intercultural subjects, gathering all types of materials (records, books, films, live recordings, publications, magazines, dissertations and so forth) and for organizing meetings and workshops with international masters. Bring us your ideas, your enthusiasm and yourselves! You are our most important supporters! Giguywassa was founded in 2002 as a company of traditional West African dance and music by Alain Nahi-Frank, a solo dancer for the Côte d'Ivoire's Ballet National. He united artists from different African countries in a group that includes Italian members too. The ensemble's members have years of experience in the performing arts and in the study of music and traditional dance. Live shows and workshops open to the public offer vibrant experiences of dialogue and cultural exchange. Giguywassa focuses mainly on producing live shows and on teaching, offering ongoing dance courses, workshops and seminars held by the company's artists and guest African masters from other parts of Europe and Africa.
